Tips For Successful Essay Writing

Creating an Impressive Response Essay on Dead Poets Society

Response essay is a type of writing where you express your opinion, your feelings, your response to something you’ve read, in this case, something you’ve watched, the film Dead Poets Society. Teachers request assignments of this kind in order to encourage students to consider carefully their thoughts and feelings about a particular work. Here are several questions you should think about while you are watching the film Dead Poets Society in order to give the appropriate response in the writing your teacher requires:

  • How do you feel while you are watching it?
  • What are the ideas you agree with and what are the ideas you don’t agree with?
  • Can you find yourself or identify with the film?
  • How do you think this film is best to evaluate?

After you finished watching the film considering these questions, you should continue with the next step. That is prewriting your response essay.

Prewriting

Look at the phrases below. Try to complete as many as possible. My reaction to the film Dead Poets Society is:

  • I see that…
  • I think that…
  • In my opinion…
  • It seems that…
  • A good example of… in the film is…
  • Moreover, …
  • For example, …
  • A good saying from the film is …
  • Finally…
  • In addition…
  • Consequently…
  • In conclusion…

When you are done completing these, you can congratulate yourself, because you have an outline of the response writing.

Organization

Just like any other essay, response writing has an introduction, a body and a conclusion. Of course, the introduction might be more than one paragraph and the body might be more than one paragraph as well.

  • The introduction – The first sentence in your introduction tells what the essay is about. The next sentences give a summary of the whole film in a nutshell. And the last statement is the thesis statement. Be careful with it, because it is the most important sentence that would later lead you through the writing. Be focused, clear and concise.
  • The body – consisting of at least one paragraph, it should elaborate your opinion and give arguments about it. Be sure that you present one idea in each paragraph. Try to relate the film to your personal experience. That way you can show that you clearly understand the work.
  • The conclusion – This part restates what was previously said in the writing. You might add a catchy sentence as a restatement of the thesis statement in order to get the whole attention of the readers.

Following these steps you can create great response writing that would catch anyone’s attention to continue reading. Especially because of the topic it elaborates.
