Tried And Tested Techniques For Writing An Excellent Literature Essay

The keys to writing an excellent literature essay at any academic level is conducting ample research and making a sound argument from an evaluative judgment, interpretation or critical evaluation perspective. A literature essay will also have thesis statement that takes a stance and is debatable. These types of assignments aren’t difficult if you know the right techniques. Here’s what you need to know to write an excellent paper:

Say something original about the text

When you craft your thesis statement you should focus on saying something original about your text. You can certainly be inspired by other things you have read or heard, but your thesis should take scholarship even further. A great practice is to simply ask yourself a series of questions you would like to have answered. Anything you are interested in finding out is bound to be interesting to the reader as well.

Choose an effective structure

Your paper needs to be organized to be easily understood by your reader. The most effective format for these kinds of assignments is the 1-2-3 format, which has an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The 5-paragraph format is a direct relative of this format, but you can certainly have more than just 3 body paragraphs if you have ample topics to discuss.

Reference the text you’re working with

No literary essay would be complete without a few references – by quoting or by paraphrasing – to the source text. Your argument must be supported by evidence taken directly from work you have read. Don’t overdo it though; too much reference may imply that you didn’t have much to say and are trying to fill pages or reach a minimum word count.

Include strong support statements

One of the most common problems students have when writing these kinds of papers is that they include quotes or paraphrased text but don’t follow it up with a supporting statement that shows how exactly this works to prove an argument. You can’t assume your reader will understand what you are trying to do. So you must explain in simple and clear English what it is you are showing by including a given reference.

Wrap it up with a great conclusion

Lastly, it’s always a good idea to craft a great concluding paragraph. You will want to include a brief summary of the major points you have made in your paper, but more importantly you want to tie it together and show the reader how it all works to prove your thesis statement. This is known as synthesis and is a key element to your final paragraph.
